Join Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt and psychoanalyst Adam Phillips for a dynamic conversation exploring the idea of “second chances” across literature and psychoanalysis.

In The Winter’s Tale, Shakespeare staged a miraculous second chance that has resonated for more than four centuries. Sigmund Freud, centuries later, wrestled with the same theme—remarking on the paradox that patients often resist the very second chance psychoanalysis seeks to provide. Drawing connections between Shakespeare’s drama and Freud’s theory, Greenblatt and Phillips examine how the hope, fear, and resistance to renewal shape both art and the human psyche.

Presented live at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater at Navy Pier.
